My Betta (Veil Tail Betta- Siamese Fighting Fish)

Dear my friends,

Today is 14 June 2007, and time is 20:14 (a rainy day)
The picture above shows my Veil Tail Betta, it is a blue fighting fish having a tinge of cyan, , it cost me $18 HK Dollars.

Last saturday, I bought a beautiful Siamese Fighting Fish" from aquarium in Tze Wan Shun, the siamese flghting fish is one of the most popular species of freshwater aquarium fish in Hong Kong. Do you know Bettas (a common name of Siamese Fighting Fish) have been affectionately nicknamed "The Jewel of the Orient", many children, like me and you, have ever bred these fighting fishes in the childhood as they come in different colors such as Blue, Red and Green.. and some wih two colors mixed.
-
I recall breeding a Betta fish (Type: Veil Tail 長尾彩) at home when I was child, I brought my Betta to fight with another siamese fighting fish which was bred by one of my friends. We often kept our Bettas in a small bottle glass and bred a little per day, even nothing to breed in full day, hungry and dark space would let Bettas to turn on their aggressive behavior, and fight back the opponent's Betta......The people said at that time.
-
Speaking of educating a stronger and aggressive Betta, I used a mirror to turn on my Betta's aggressive behavior prior to fighting with other fishes. My Betta (長尾彩Veil Tail also, it was a red Betta with a tinge of green) cost me about 2 dollars in my age of 10 while a strong Betta (Plakat 將軍彩) with lasting aggressive behavior was $5 in the market. I was unwilling but had no choice to buy a Veil Tail Betta because I was given only a little petty cash for breakfast a day. However, unfortunately, my friend who brought his Plakat Betta for the fight, his Betta should be worth $8 HK dollars.. Let's imagine, How a $2 HK dollars Betta could fight back a Betta which was worth $8 in the same market?
The attractive point is coming........don't leave your seat!
-
We put our Bettas into a small container and turned their aggressive behavior on by using mirror, the size of my Betta looked like a "S" T-shirt while that of my friend's Betta was "XL" , the fight was unfair, unreasonable and unacceptable by a 10 year-old child. Blessedly, my Betta killed his Plakat Betta at the end of the fight, I saw my Veil Tail Betta flaring its gill covers and fighting again to the dead Plakat, my Veil Tail ate the dead Plakat's fines one piece by one..
Certainly, I gave my Betta a long vacation and bred it some bloodworms in reward.

Through this talking, I would like to tell you about 3 important points that might be dangerous for the Betta, please carefully taste the following advice if you intend to breed your Betta in the near day:
  • First, the betta has a labyrinth organ which allows it to take in oxygen from the surface air, similar to the human lung. If the betta can not reach the surface of the water, which can be the case if a plant's roots are covering the surface, the betta will suffocate in a matter of hours.
  • Secondly, Betta species are carnivorous and an appropriate food must be provided, such as live or frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp, also water in the tank shall be kept at 27 degree because all Bettas should come from native Thailand, as they are a tropical breed.
  • Thirdly, Don't put more than two Bettas into a tank or a small container, they may fight with each other as they are a kind of aggressive fighting fish, it is not suitable for two Bettas to trap into a small container especially two male B.splenders shall not be housed in the same tank unless they are separated by a dividing wall.

You are welcome to write to me or ask something about the colorful siamese fighting fishes either by mail or by a phone call, I will do every possible effort to get back to you as soon as I can.

With Best Wishes,
