UNHCR concerned about malnutrition levels among new Somali refugees

12 Jul 2011

GENEVA, July 5 (UNHCR) – The UN refugee agency is concerned about the high incidence of malnutrition among Somali refugees flowing into Ethiopia and Kenya amid a devastating drought in their conflict-racked country.
The relentless violence, compounded by drought, has forced more than 135,000 Somalis to flee so far this year. In June alone, 54,000 people fled across the two borders, three times the number of people who fled in May.
.

"UNHCR is particularly disturbed by unprecedented levels of malnutrition among the new arrivals – especially among refugee children," UNHCR's chief spokesperson, Melissa Fleming, said in Geneva on Tuesday. "More than 50 per cent of Somali children arriving in Ethiopia are seriously malnourished, while among those arriving to Kenya that rate is somewhat lower, but equally worrying – between 30 to 40 per cent," she added.

.
Fleming said UNHCR estimated that a quarter of Somalia's 7.5 million population was now either internally displaced or living outside the country as refugees. She added that the drought and prevailing violence in southern and central parts of the country, were "turning one of the world's worst humanitarian crises into a human tragedy of unimaginable proportions."
The conflict makes it difficult for aid agencies to reach the most vulnerable and needy people. "Many families tell us they exhausted virtually all of their resources. Facing starvation, they walk for days, several weeks at times, through the desert, arriving in an appalling state of health," Fleming said.

.
Increasingly, UNHCR staff are hearing reports of children below the age of five dying of hunger and exhaustion during the journey. Many children are in such a weak condition when they finally arrive that they die within 24 hours.

.
In north-east Kenya's Dadaab refugee camp complex, where some 1,400 refugees are arriving every day, UNHCR and its partners are distributing high energy biscuits for instant calories and micronutrients. These are life-saving interventions. In addition to malnutrition, overcrowding of the camps, which already host more than 382,000 people, is a major concern.
In Ethiopia, refugees are registered at the border by authorities before being transferred to a UNHCR transit centre where they receive hot meals and go through health and nutrition screening. UNHCR recently opened a new camp at Kobe, the third in south-east Ethiopia, which is quickly reaching its capacity of 20,000.

.
"Together with Ethiopian authorities and in anticipation of a continued influx, we have identified a fourth site and discussions are under way about the location of the fifth camp," UNHCR's Fleming said.
She added that as part of UNHCR's response, a chartered Boeing 747 was due to land in Addis Ababa later on Tuesday with a cargo of 100 tonnes of relief items. A convoy of some 20 trucks loaded with thousands of tents and other aid left from Djibouti on Monday afternoon and was expected to reach the Ethiopian capital on Thursday. The High Commissioner is set to visit Ethiopia and Kenya later this week.

.
A UNHCR appeal covering the needs of protection, food, shelter, health services and other life-saving aid supplies is about to be issued. The needs are urgent and massive. In the light of the urgency of the situation, UNHCR not only calls on governments but also on individual donors and the private sector to urgently support operations in Ethiopia and Kenya.
.

There are now more than 750,000 Somali refugees living in the region, mostly in neighbouring Kenya (405,000), Yemen (187,000) and Ethiopia (110,000). Another 1.46 million are displaced within Somalia.

He has joined the Kendo Class!

Dear all

My nephew has joined the Kendo Class. I hope that this class can teach him how to build up his confidence and learning attitude, and it will lead him to respect people, in particular to his parent.

Nice to hear from his decision.

A decision to join / not to join the Kendo Class

Dear friends,
.
It has been more than two months not to write article since the beginning of this MAY, this article has a good message to bring you all, perhaps this is not related to any of yours but is meaningful to me, to definitely my nephew and his mother (My sister Jessica Ngan). I still remember my first Kendo Class was in May of 2007 and I still have good memory and familiar feeling despite years. Maybe this was not a boon to me, I suffered my backache during the pracitce time, the pain had ceased my Kendo Class no matter whether I was willing or not willing to.

.

With the aid of having a fine impression, of course this impression is to Japanese's swordmanship, I suggested a visit for Kendo class to my sister and my nephew last Saturday, Tom Leung (my nephew) who didn't seem to have a spark of interest in learning Kendo but his mother did more after the visit. By the sword and Kendo's spirit, I really hope that Tom Leung can join this class as I know that he will take the advanatage of good training from swordmanship through the class if he could join. Being a good uncle, I am willing to sponson 1 year Kendo tuition and a set of Kendo uniform, except that, I will give him my used swords (bamboo sword and wooden sword) as present.

-

Kendo is a traditional wushu in Japan providing optimization and concentration with trainee, each trainee will definitely be educated to respect his/her parent, and his/her friends, the most important things being learnt from the Kendo course are " to optimize trainee's personality, moral, soul and to strengthen trainee's boby". From below, photos showing my formerly colleague who was training on the beach with his kendo's classmate (The bare-headed one is my formerly colleague)

-
No need to say, I strongly recommend Tom Leung to join this course because KENDO CLASS can bring him to a good area where he can find many friends there and where he can learn what's respect, and learn to treat people with respect. A good friend can change a person's life, A good course can enhance a person's mentality, A good decision can affect a person's life path.
.
Awaiting for his sound!

It's all about the win

Dear friends;

-
On 29th March 11, it was the most important day to me and was indeed crucial to my career path, this day an interview was held in the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department. Before the interview, I tried and used any way to get away from the exam pressure; a favorite movie plus a delicious dinner on Exam eve were the way for me to forget temporarily the stress.
-
Being a winner was not easy these days, I had to bury my nose in the book day in and day out in order to stay ahead and to win the oral exam in the interview. A 4-day annual leave on 24th, 25th, 28th and 29th (exclusively Saturday on 26 and Sunday on 27) was approved as study for the exam. During these days, I missed out so much happening around me (such as the latest news about the earthquake incident in Japan, and the evolution about a one-off-grant refund of $6,000 to each citizen from HK government) as I only focused on how to face the oral exam. There were other interesting things so close to me but I was too busy at these days to stop and to treasure them. Definitely these days I just felt suffocated so that why I needed to have a favorite move and a delicious dinner to lower the tension on Exam eve.
-
Before going to the hell (the so-called 4-day study leave), I had chosen for myself a favorite movie (movie name: Beastly) in the evening of 17 March after office, enjoying movie is actually one of my favorite pastimes, especially with good interest to the Hollywood made film. Going to the cinema can take me away for the time being from reality and can relax my soul. The movie (say Beastly) is so well-liked in USA and in HK; its lovely story could help me forget the exam pressure.
-
After the movie, I joined in a special dinner with my friends in the 18th evening, we ordered in rough several dishes (oyster congee, Chiu style oyster pie, and roast duck) and beers to celebrate a living hell that came along with preparing for the oral interview in EMSD. That night was indeed happy, definitely was, it was.
-
The day 1 (24th Mar 11) I went back to the library of the HK Polytechnic U for my 1st day study; I boldly rescheduled my original review table and slightly changed the study plan for the coming three days. It’s a true that the priority of a candidate is to acquire technique and do well at the oral examination. For this, I thought of an important open sesame to help me easy keep those boring regulations, code of practice and information in mind, that was reading loudly to the books, of course a quiet place (such as a small garden which is quite near the “A CORE” building in the University) could be giving me a space which is free from the students, the garden, growing beautiful flowers and shrubs, is far from the library and it is always, always a consideration to me in preparing my speech before presentation.
-
Day 1 schedule
10:00am to 12:00pm (Chapter 327- lifts and escalators (safety) ordinance)
1:00pm to 5:00pm (Testing Procedure for new lift, existing lift and escalator)
5:00pm to 6:00m (Calculation)
7:00pm to 10:00pm (Code of Practice on the design and construction of lifts and escalators)
-
Following the Day 1, I seemed to acquire great amount of energy in study and mind starting from the morning of Day 2, such change was of great assistance to my study plan, it indeed accelerated my Day 2 progress and made me more time to prepare my soul for the Day 3 and Day 4.
-
Day 2 schedule
10:00am to 12:00pm (Review for past oral questions)
1:00pm to 4:00pm (Testing Procedure for new lift, existing lift and escalator)

11:00am to 1:30pm (Review all and well prepare for afternoon exam)
2:00pm to 5:00pm (Oral Exam in EMSD)
-
Around 5:00pm, my oral exam in EMSD was completed, the first thing I needed to do was to go to the fast-food restaurant for my lunch, I ordered a noodle mixed with luncheon meat and double eggs, and of course a favorite ice-tea was. Personally, I was satisfied the whole exam as I had tried my best to it.
-
Fortunately, I received a government letter on 8 April 11 and informed me that I passed in the oral exam and I has been included in the registers of lift engineer and escalator engineer kept under section 5 of the Lifts and Escalators ordinance, chapter 327. My RLE No. is L418, and REE No. is E390. I sent at my first time short message to all my friends about this good news and thanked to them for teaching me, training me and helping me in this exam. Else a best friend I have to thank to her, she is called “Diligence”, she has been accompanying me on day-in and day-out in the study period, Ms Diligence who has ever left from me a several years ago but she comes with me again when I need her. Ms Diligence who also introduced her best friend to me, she is called “Humility”, I brought her together in the exam place, my success is that she always reminded me to hear and response to the examiner carefully
-
Coming down to the earth, my success is not only because I have made friends with “Diligence and Humility”, but a team of good friends at my back here.
-

Finally, I have to thank
